Worms and Dirt

After school today, we had our quarterly Primary activity for the children at church between the ages of 3 and 11.

Our theme was Sharing the Gospel, which we related to planting a seed, nourishing the plant, and reaping the harvest.

The children were divided into 3 groups, and they rotated among 3 activities.

In one, our Primary president Wyndie showed a slide presentation called "Growing Your Testimony."  The children then cut and colored handouts to reinforce what they learned.

Crystal, our first counselor, led the children in some crafts that involved glow sticks and yarn.  Her message was about sharing the Gospel with our friends and watching them grow and bloom.

Our second counselor, Barbara, talked about sowing seeds, and then she helped the children plant 2 seeds in cups to take home.  She showed them how to nourish and water them and gave instructions for their care.

Sarah tells me one was a sunflower seed, but she couldn't recall what the other was.

Here the kids lined up their paper cup "flower pots" to sit in the sun after watering them.

Dylan took most of these pictures for me since I was busy elsewhere.  I instructed him to get shots of everyone and their activities, but he tended to cut off everyone's heads!

Sarah, our Primary Sunbeams' teacher (3-year-olds), helped out with Barbara's group.  I got this picture when she came into the kitchen to fill the watering can for the kids to sprinkle their newly planted seeds.

Where was I, the Primary secretary?  I was in the kitchen, filling cups with mud, dirt, and worms.  Well, not really, but I was making Dirt-and-Worms cups for the childrens' treat at the end of the activitiy.

I imagine we've all served this delicious treat at a birthday party or two, so I won't share the recipe. We all know it involves Oreo cookies, chocolate pudding, Cool Whip, and gummy worms.

Dylan, a Primary graduate, was a big help when he topped off each cup with a pair of colorful worms.  As you can see, we made just a few of these treats...

The kids really enjoyed their dirt and worms.  So did many of the parents, who kept popping into the kitchen to enjoy one of their childhood favorites!  That's okay, we had plenty and to spare!
