Spirit Fairies

My 2nd period English class had a visit from the Spirit Fairies today.
*
Usually they represent school spirit, but today the Spirit Fairies represented the Spirit of Giving.
*
All gussied up in tutus, wigs, wings, and assorted other purple-and-gold accouterments were our principals (left to right): principal Eric Harmon, assistant principal Dave Clark, and assistant principal Luke Smith (who is also our mayor, as I've mentioned before).
*
Below, Mr. Clark daintily mans the donation box.
Last week we completed our annual Penny Wars, wherein each classroom has a penny jar and a bomb jar. The idea is to be the class with the most pennies in your jar at the end of the "war," but the other classes can bomb you with silver coins and bills. The amount in your bomb jar is subtracted from your penny amount. In other words, you could have $100 in pennies, but if your bomb jar contains $100 in bills and silver, your class's credit for pennies is a whopping "zero"!
*
The battle sometimes gets intense, but it's all in good fun for a worthy cause. This year the students raised $2,592 in pennies and bombing cash! The money goes to helping families in need buy food and gifts for Christmas, as well as necessities such as jackets and shoes.
This week was Shop-with-a-Cop week. Donations are collected for the local police department to take needy children shopping for Christmas gifts.
*
Last year the students raised $1,400 in one day! Mr. Harmon, our brand-new principal, set a goal to beat that amount today. Thus he and his fellow Fairies traveled from classroom to classroom, making us laugh while encouraging the Spirit of Giving. We'll hear the final total on Monday, but they announced that we did top last year's donations well before the school day ended.
*
Mr. Harmon reciprocated by giving each student one free tardy pass. He also announced that all next week lunch will be extended 5 minutes AND school will be let out 5 minutes early! You can imagine there was much rejoicing among the student body.
*
But imagine the greater joy among the families who will be blessed by this outpouring of love and generosity. That's what it's all about!
